Fontana Lake - The Mountains of North Carolina's Best Kept Secret!

Fontana Lake in Western North CarolinaLive in the mountains but never leave the water.  Fontana Lake is the mountain’s best kept secret. With over 11,000 acres and over 29 miles long, this lake has more than 240 miles of shoreline.  And like the magnificent mountains in this area, the lakeshore is more than 90 percent owned by either the National Park Service or the US Forest Service.

Plan to enjoy this pristinely protected body of water for years to come.  For thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail, it marks the beginning or end of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, depending on your direction of travel.  Fontana Lake is a man made lake controlled by the biggest dam east of the Rockies.  In the winter when the lake levels are down, you might glimpse the remains of houses left in place when the dam was constructed and the lake filled with water.  Making this underwater world a city of its own for smallmouth bass, walleye, muskie and a variety of other fish.

You can tow your own boat, launch it at several public access areas and enjoy the surroundings as it was meant to be….  quiet calm,  enchanting sunsets, surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From a few places, you have an unobstructed view of Clingmans Dome, towering at an elevation 6643 feet, the highest point in the mountain chain.
