Haywood County has clean, invigorating air and plentiful small-town shopping.  Main Street is the centerpiece of Waynesville, with awning-shaded stores, tree-lined streets, goose-necked street lamps, and renovated historic buildings.

During Art After Dark, held on the first Friday of each month from May through December, Main Street artists demonstrate their crafts. Many artist owned galleries feature thier art as well as many other wonderful local artisans.

The town is alive every summer with cultural events including annual festivals, theatre, street dances, block parties and live music venues. As the county seat, Waynesville is also home to the Haywood County courthouse.

Mast General Store on Main Street is a step back in time. This 1930s emporium sells everything from clothing and old-fashioned candy to house wares, candles and grain grinders.

Cold Mountain, made famous by author Charles Frazier and a 2003 Hollywood movie, peaks at 6,000 feet and is about 11 miles from Waynesville. William Pinkney Inman, the main character of Frazier's novel, is buried in a cemetery in Bethel, a Haywood County hamlet.

Maggie Valley, named for the daughter of Maggie Valley's first postmaster, is the site of Wheels Through Time, a museum devoted to American transportation, with the emphasis on 250 motorcycles and cars from 1900 to the present. Dance halls and restaurants along Soco Road give locals and visitors ample nightlife choices. And for the enjoyment of children of all ages, there is Ghost Town. The mile-high amusement part recently reopened bring the history of cowboys and Indians to life.
